Challenge 68 - Cat

Warm greetings to all PADT artists.
I would like to sincerely thank you for your overwhelming response to the previous challenge, which clearly showed that there are many animal lovers out there (no surprise). This inspired our new challenge. This time of a beautiful cat.

About the composition

She is a very friendly  young mom with small, adorable kittens. And did not mind posing for me, especially after I shared my lunch (baked chicken) with her.

What spoke to me in this reference was almost absence of any color. This reminded me of how important are value studies in our artistic journey, and how surprising it is to accept that we as artists can mold any form very convincingly without any color. Just by using gray scale values, from pure white to the darkest black.

You might feel like doing a pencil drawing in the tones of gray, or painting in color enhancing the composition with more color and variety. Let your artistic muse guide your inspiration and creativity.

Please send your drawings and paintings before July 02, 2017. The next challenge will be posted on July 03.

Thank you for participating and Happy Painting,
Lela

Nelvia McGrath

Artist:  Nelvia McGrath
Size”   8”x9”
Medium/Support:  Pastel/Paper
Artist Website:  nelviasart.com
Painting Technique:  The background in this piece is very impressionistic, it is one of the things that attracted me to the piece along with the beauty of the dog.  However, I downplayed it so the dog is definitely the star.  The dog itself is done with pastel pencils on sand Ingres paper.  This is a method used by Colin Bradley and I am currently studying and working through his projects.  While we had a Shepherd when I was younger I have never drawn one.  This dog is such a wonderful example of the breed and a stunning model.

Challenge 67 - Shepherd Dog

Scrolling through paintings from the last challenge made me feel as if I am visiting some well know museum where every style embraced by well known artists through centuries was present. It felt great knowing that there is so much talent and potential out there we as artists are blessed with, and it is our gift and fortune to express it and share with the world around us. Thank you for this special privilege of enjoying your art.

About the composition

There is something very magical in the way colors are distributed around in this photo reference.
If I think what would that be, the very first observation coming to my mind is a play of two complementary colors,  cold blue-purple on one side and warm yellow-orange on the opposite side.

The dog has blue-purple nose, below the eyes, some fur areas on the left side, while the rest of it is yellow-orange.  Interestingly, background has the same colors just arranged in such way that cold blue-purple is always next to warm yellow orange. Simply there is no area where background is yellow orange and foreground is yellow orange. There is always a passage of blue-purple in between.

It would be interesting if you try to emphasize this play of colors and adjust color values and intensity to communicate darker, more pronounced dog in the foreground, and relatively dark closest background vanishing into pale, hazy blue and gold in the far away background.

Please send your paintings before May 14, 2017. The next challenge will be posted on May 15.

Thank you for participating and Happy Painting,
Lela

Challenge 66 - Bouquet of Flowers

This is our first challenge in the New Year. And as we look back at 2016 it is very heartwarming to scroll through all posts and admire the art we all created together. Without all of you this blog would have not existed and in the name of all PADT artists and our visitors I would like to Thank You and express my sincere gratitude and appreciation.

I feel honored to share passion for creating art with all of you, and even though time sometimes can get in the way, I have great plans for our PADT blog and our artist community in 2017. For now let's keep it a secret ☺.

About the composition

-Light. Although having a single source of light makes identifying shadows easier, this wasn't a case in this photo reference. Our subject was lit by multiple light bulbs from the front. That slightly complicates the process of identifying shadows and making sure they are consistent. Hence, if you feel a need, feel free to eliminate any unwanted shadows and introduce new to communicate desired atmosphere.
- Focal point. The white of the vase is very pronounced and if painted as it is in the photo, it would overpower the whole composition. Please tone down the vase so that the focus is not on it. Instead, emphasize one of the flowers, for example top yellow on the right side is a good candidate.
- Background. It is a solid black which creates a feeling of solid wall behind. In fact it was a glass wall and a dark night outside. Instead, it would be more engaging and artistically interesting if you create something interesting behind the flowers. Either transition of the color from dark to light around, or non-intrusive barely recognizable shapes such as window, curtains, etc.
-Size. It is of course your choice how big the painting you would like to paint would be. If  you choose to paint the whole composition, from my experience size 16"x20" looks like a good choice.
- Full or portion of the composition. Feel free to paint a portion of full composition. The more brush miles we all make the better our art will become.

Please send your paintings before Mar 12, 2016. The next challenge will be posted on March 13.

Happy Painting!
Lela
